Our MAT Classes

The MAT paper represents a significant step up from the A-Level Mathematics curriculum. It tests not only a student's mathematical knowledge but also their ability to apply concepts creatively under time pressure. However, we firmly believe that, with a structured learning approach, a solid grasp of the tricks and techniques required, and, most importantly, a strong commitment from the student, mastering this challenging exam is entirely achievable.

Our courses are designed with depth and focus. We know the MAT inside out, from its structure to exam techniques, to the nuances of approaching multiple-choice versus fully written questions. Some of our tutors are former MAT examiners, bringing invaluable insight into what the examiners look for and how students can tailor their approach to maximise marks.

Small Class Sizes

Our group classes are intentionally kept small, with no more than five students per session. This ensures an interactive learning environment where each student receives personalised attention. The small group dynamic fosters engagement, allowing students to ask questions freely and gain deeper insights into challenging topics. From our experience, students remain in contact after the course has ended, this provides a support network ahead of the paper.

Coverage of Guaranteed Syllabus

We ensure every topic in the syllabus is covered comprehensively, including:

Polynomials and Algebra
Sequences and Series
Differentiation and Integration
Logarithms and powers
Graphs and Transformations
Geometry and Trigonometry

Focus on Exam Technique and Common Pitfalls

Our extensive experience means we understand the types of questions that students often struggle with. We are also familiar with the mathematical skills that each question is designed to test. This allows us to direct our teaching towards highlighting techniques and strategies to help students approach questions confidently. By relating new questions to similar problems covered during the course, we ensure that students develop a clear and methodical approach to tackling unfamiliar scenarios.

We dedicate time to explaining the key differences between the multiple-choice and fully written sections, showing students how to optimise their time and present clear, logical solutions to earn maximum marks. Additionally, our tutors provide tips on recognising the "tricks" built into the questions and how to avoid common traps.

What Makes us Different

Some of our tutors have experience as former MAT examiners. Their insider knowledge helps students understand how the exam is marked, the level of rigour expected in their answers, and the subtle cues that can distinguish an average response from an excellent one. This expertise allows us to train students to meet, and exceed, the standards of the MAT.

Our course doesn’t just teach students the syllabus, it equips them with the mindset and confidence to approach the exam like a seasoned mathematician. From mastering foundational topics to fine-tuning their ability to solve complex, non-routine problems, students leave the course prepared to excel.

Cambridge Mathematics Admissions Course

Applying to the Mathematics program at the University of Cambridge follows a structured process. Students must decide whether to apply to a specific college or submit an open application. They are required to sit the Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP) as part of the admissions process and submit their UCAS application, including a personal statement and reference, by 15 October. Shortlisted candidates are then invited to an interview in December to demonstrate their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

STEP assessments are conducted in June and are a pivotal component of the conditional offer, typically requiring candidates to achieve at least a grade 1 in both STEP II and III. Designed to challenge even the most capable students, STEP tests advanced problem-solving skills far beyond standard A-level content. Our tutors, who have excelled in their own STEP exams, bring unparalleled expertise in the structure and demands of this challenging assessment. Recognising the complexities of these papers, our courses begin early, offering tailored preparation for STEP II and STEP III. This ensures students receive comprehensive coverage of the specific content and techniques needed to excel.

The Courses We Offer

Next Course Start Date: January 2025

  • 8 hours of STEP II preparation classes

How We Teach STEP

Our STEP courses offer full coverage and targeted preparation. Backed by tutors who have scored in the top 5% nationally, we bring unparalleled expertise in the exam's structure, question types, and the distinctions between STEP II and STEP III. Our teaching approach is systematic yet dynamic, encouraging active student participation and problem-solving through carefully crafted problem sets.

Each STEP paper comprises 12 questions, divided into three sections: 8 questions on pure mathematics, 2 on mechanics, and 2 on probability and statistics. Candidates are typically required to answer six questions of their choice. To maximise success, we quickly identify each student’s strengths and tailor their focus towards specific questions, ensuring they maximise marks in the paper.

However, our ambition goes beyond helping students "hack" the STEP papers. We aim to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper understanding of mathematics—skills that will prove invaluable during their time at Cambridge and beyond. Our goal is to inspire a passion for problem-solving that transcends the exam and equips students for success in their future academic journeys.

Classes Designed Around Your Level

All of our courses are designed with the ultimate goal of helping students achieve a grade 1 in both STEP papers. However, we recognise that students progress at different paces in school, and grouping students with varying levels of academic progress does not add value. For instance, some schools prioritise A-Level Mathematics before introducing Further Mathematics, while others may not cover Mechanics at all. To address this, we make a deliberate effort to group students by ability, ensuring that each class is paced appropriately.

Best-in-Class Tutors

Our tutor selection process for the Cambridge admissions programme is different from all other services we offer. Each tutor undergoes a rigorous two-round interview process, followed by a mock lesson to demonstrate their teaching ability. All tutors must have prior experience in STEP tuition, and in some cases, we spend months finding the ideal tutor to join this programme.

We are committed to delivering a high standard of teaching and do not compromise by onboarding tutors who are unfamiliar with the material. Every tutor is capable of sitting the STEP paper themselves and achieving top grades. This ensures that our lessons are as productive as possible. Our tutors are expected to have deep knowledge of the exam materials, be able to recall and explain questions confidently, and address students' unique approaches without relying on official solutions. This standard of preparation allows our tutors to provide students with a best-in-class learning experience.

Learn the Language of Mathematics

Most exams that students encounter award marks primarily for correct answers, often with minimal attention to the workings shown. The STEP paper stands apart by placing a strong emphasis on mathematical rigour and a clear, structured approach in all answers. Examiners reward solutions that demonstrate a logical, step-by-step process, while fragmented or incomplete answers receive little credit.

To address this, we teach students to use the precise mathematical language expected at a university level. Our approach not only helps students impress examiners with their mastery of mathematical proof but also equips them with the foundational skills needed for the next three (or more) years of studying mathematics at Cambridge.

Our Tesimonials

Always Available To Help

I received an offer to study Mathematics at Cambridge because of the team at Oxbridge Math! My school hadn't yet taught me enough of the further maths curriculum I needed for the STEP III materials, so I was very worried about taking this exam. I'm so grateful to Xihang, he responded to me whenever I needed help on a question and his answers were so much clearer than the solutions online.

Realistic Interview Practice

I remember when Zayn asked me a question in our mock interview about ants walking on a line. At first, this seemed like a random question, but when it came to my interviews, I was asked an even more random question! Looking back, I'm really glad I prepared for these obscure logical problems because I initiallly thought the interviews would only test my A-Level knowledge.

Our Approach

No two courses are identically taught, we adapt to our students, the length of the course and the University the student is applying for. However, our approach in designing these courses has remained consistent. Our Mock Interviews and Personal Statement Reviews are designed by iterating and learning from past student feedback. We truly believe we have a unique course offering.

The Mock Interviews

We have spoken with current and former Oxford students to gain insight into their experiences with the interview process. While the interview is often considered the most daunting part of the application, it is also an invaluable opportunity to showcase your thought process and engage in mathematical problem-solving.

Our tutors have access to a comprehensive and exclusive database of interview questions, covering topics such as number theory, logic, puzzles, game theory, graph sketching, and much more—questions that cannot be found online. Crucially, we provide detailed feedback after each mock interview, allowing students to identify areas for improvement. Students can also request specific topics they wish to focus on, tailoring the experience to their needs.

Through multiple mock interviews, students will refine their mathematical communication skills and develop the confidence to approach their actual interviews with clarity and poise.

Personal Statement Review

A personal statement should be unique to the student and capture the attention of the admissions tutor. That’s why, while we provide example statements from successful Oxford applicants, we encourage every student to tell their own story about their mathematical journey. Once a draft has been written by the student, we provide detailed feedback on its structure and content. This may include suggesting extension material for the student to explore further or recommending additional reading to demonstrate a willingness to delve deeper into a topic discussed in the statement. We understand what admissions tutors are looking for. Unlike other UK universities, Oxbridge places far less emphasis on extracurricular activities. Instead, demonstrating academic interest is of the utmost priority. We ensure our students' personal statements reflect this, providing targeted feedback to refine and polish them to the highest standard.

Scheduling

We always try our best to schedule our courses around your availability, we partner with students internationally and run our courses at all hours of the day. If you are unable to attend a lesson, don't worry! We always record our MAT/STEP classes and make an effort to reach out to those that missed our classes if they need further support.
